Signature piece for an artist is something that people come to recognize 'specific' for a particular artist that is apparant in each of their artworks. When others see something similar to an artist's signature piece, they immediately think of that artist and their art practice. It could be their signature, style, theme, mediums used, composition; - we ask the artist, 'What make's you you, as an artist?'. The Signature Piece demonstrates a clear image of their artist statement and what it is that they set to achieve by their art making. Organically, it is the natural movement of the handling of the materials to create a distinct personal artwork, only known to that one artist.
However, appropriation takes place in the artworld, making it hard to decipher an exact original piece of artwork. Appropriation in art and art history refers to the practice of artists using pre-existing objects or images in their art with little transformation of the original. The only true way of knowing the difference is in the 'hand of the artist' itself - Does this then make the artwork Signature to this artist? Appropriation is not necessarily a negitive in the artworld; this is how the artist learns and finds out from their predecessors.
Unconscious art making can bring out an artist's true self, be it through the fundamentals, spoken about previously; style, theme, mediums used, composition. The inspiration and source of artistic creation mostly come from expression and symbolization of subconscious. Subconscious is a special mental state and a person's internal mental process. Meanwhile, subconscious is also the best way to understand thoroughly people's inner thoughts.
